Why learn to touch type?

You know how we all read and write without giving a second thought, or we drive a car, or we ride a bike without thinking about it. We do it automatically because we've trained ourselves and practiced so that we can do these things and focus on something else at the same time. This is called cognitive automatically, the ability to do things without conscious attention or awareness

When we touch type we go through the same experience. We can type as fast as we can think; we multi task, we don't have to think where a particular key is on the keyboard, we're free to focus on writing down our ideas.

Although you can type using the hunt and peck two finger method the best typing skills come with touch typing. This way you use all your fingers and float over the keys and keep your eyes on the screen or on the work that you are copying or working from making the task easier, faster, more accurate and more efficient. With hunting and pecking the typist's eyes have to continually return to look at the keyboard to scan for position and much more body movement and effort is evident.

Essentially, you've done the hard part. You learnt to write. All you need to do now is to convert your writing skills to efficient typing skills.

How to get noticed at work for all the right reasons

Just let's say that your current typing speed with reasonable accuracy is 20 - 25 words per minute.

And let's say that you have to type a dozen e-mails each day and these take you around ten minutes each. That's 120 minutes; you're spending 2 hours each day typing.

Now let's say that you learnt how to touch type and you increased your typing speed with reasonable accuracy to 40-50 words per minute. That's twice as fast as your previous performance. On a like for like basis you're only taking 60 minutes to do the same number of e-mails (and probably with less stress and effort).

That's an hour a day you're saving. A 100% increase in your efficiency. And we all know when we walk into an office that it's not difficult to see who's good on their computer or not. The ones with skill and confidence at the keyboard get noticed for all the right reasons. They can fill in forms or knock out e-mails or reports fast and are the ones likely to do well in their careers.

This is just an example. Your base line speed might be higher, or lower than the above example but it would be hard to imagine that you wouldn't improve with some training in touch typing.

Learning a language is like learning to type, there's lots of repetition involved.
